Post VD

Hello Everyone,

Posting a fun little video about what I did on Valentine's Day. My girlfriend, Becky, and I went to a friend's house to watch the premier of The Walking Dead's 2nd half of the season.

I do an update on my dynasty football leagues and show off a new trophy. I also show off my Purple Teddy.

This is probably going to be the only 'cooking' video blog I'll do, so enjoy.

Thanks for watching. I'd love to see what you got to say. Leave a comment down below. Let's have a conversation!

Until next time...Stay out of trouble and do something that brings Joy to your life!

First Video Blog...Highway 61 Experiment

Hello Everyone,

Guess who got a camcorder for Christmas? Yep, me!

So, what was the first thing I did with it? I recorded myself Geocaching. Not any geocaching adventure, I had a plan in mind.

One of the main reasons I started this blog was because I have set a major goal; Drive and Geocache Route 66. Well, I wanted to see what it might look like this Fall when I geocache Route 66 so I used Highway 61 as a test run.

This highway in Minnesota use to be the main route to Duluth, Minnesota from the Twin Cities. Highway 61 is nowhere close to being as iconic as Route 66, but I wanted to experiment on what it might look like in September. How many geocaches can I find in a day? How many miles can I travel in a day?

Below is the video blog I put together. After you watch it, read on and I'll talk about some differences I foresee and some lessons I did learn. I know it's my 1st video I ever put together, so please be understanding. I plan and making improvements in the future. Enjoy.

Hoped you liked it. So what are some differences in that experience versus what it'll be like when I drive the Mother Road (aka Route 66)?

I am going in the Fall and not in Winter. Jumping out of the van to quickly look for geocaches will be a bit faster. I might be able to find more in one day than 30 that day.

There is going to be other places to visit besides geocaches...vintage gas stations, museums, tourist traps, ghost towns, greasy spoons for meals, well known hotels/motels to stay at, plenty of places to take photographs, people to talk to, city attractions, and numerous other stops.

Also, I will not totally be going solo. The first half of my vacation I will be by myself. When I hit St. Louis, my girlfriend, Becky, will be flying in and joining me for the second half of the trip. Geocaching will run a little smoother with her there. She can do some of the driving to the geocaching locations where I'll be able to hop out and quickly find the container. This will help save some time.

So, here are some things I did learn....

I have list of 414 geocaches, within a reasonable distance, along Route 66. I am going to have to trim that number down quite a bit. I am going to cut out any geocaches that are in the major cities like Chicago and St. Louis (unless they have a lot of favorite points).

Side note...On Geocaching.com, premium members get to give geocaches 'favorite points' for caches they really enjoyed finding.

I am also going to eliminate any geocaches that have zero favorite points, unless they are somehow Route 66 related.

One thing I keep reading, when I am researching Route 66, is that most people will tell you not to set a iron clad schedule. There might some days I decided not to geocache at all and enjoy the ride and enjoy the sites.

Lastly, I don't know if you noticed, but I am going to need to go to a store like Duluth Trading Post and purchase some extra long t-shirts.

UPDATE: Been almost a week since I quit smoking and drinking pop. Been tough, especially at work and when I am driving in my van, but I am hanging in there.

One thing I have noticed is that I have been getting better sleep. My caffeine intake has drastically dropped and I think the sleep I have been getting has been a deeper sleep than usual. Been waking up more refreshed than ever before.

That's it for now. I'll keep you updated on how things go as I make changes.

Until next time, stay out of trouble

What if.....stuff happens

What is the first thing you feel or think when you hear, "What if"?

Was it a negative or positive response? There is a reason why I am asking.

I don't know if you noticed (especially if have been reading this blog from the beginning) I haven't talked much about how my goals are going. That's because they haven't going well at all. Tried to workout more, but I fizzled out on that within three weeks. Tried quit smoking, but that last a couple of days. Tried not drinking pop, but that lasted a day or two.

A lot of my goals I want to conquer is tied into driving and geocaching Route 66. The goal is that when I give up the smokes and pop, that money is to go towards the trip.  What if I don't quit? What if I don't quit soon enough? What then?

Side note: Decided to do the Route 66 trip in September of 2016.

Ever hear someone say, 'There are two types of people in the world. Cat people or Dog people'? Or something very similar to it? Well, there seems to be two types of people when it comes to What If situations.

Some allow themselves to go into a dark spiral within their heads. 'What if this bad thing happens?' or 'What if that good thing doesn't happen?' This route usually leads from a negative What If to another negative What If which leads to a bummer of a scenario played out in one's head.

Some use 'What If' to their advantage. There is a story of Thomas Edison when he was working on perfecting the lightbulb. He went through hundreds of different types of metals when he was trying find out which one would work the best and longest. He never looked at a failed metal as a failure. He saw it as a success. What if this metal doesn't work? He saw it as successfully eliminating a metal from all the possibilities until he found one that worked.

It seems like its easier for people to take the darker road though. I think most people go through life with the mind set, 'Expect the worst and hope for the best'. That seems like such a sucky way to go through life. Don't have too high of hopes, you are only setting yourself up for an eventual disappointment. And disappointments hurt.

It's true, disappointments hurt. So should we avoid hoping for anything at all? Let fear lead our lives?

I don't know if you noticed, but stuff (to put it kindly) happens. Life is tough. Nobody gets out this life without some kind of scars from disappointments.

I want to take these goals I have set up for myself with the mind set of Thomas Edison. My methods of concurring my goals so far have failed. I feel that I need to try another method. And what if that fails? I have successfully eliminated a method of quitting the pop and cigarettes and I will try another method after that. I am going to continue this until I succeed.

So here is my next brilliant idea. I tried quitting one habit (smoking or drinking pop) or start a positive habit (exercise more or eat better) over a four month period randomly each month. What if I do all four at once and take a giant leap of faith that I can do this? And why not? What do I have to lose? I have everything to gain.

One thing I know for sure is that I will have to pick a day when I am not working to start. I work 10 days in a row with a 4 day weekend off after that. I know, when it comes to smoking, I'll need at least 3 days to have the nicotine work itself out of my system. Quit smoking in the middle of my 10 day stretch of work does not seem prudent. So my next 4 day weekend off starts Thursday, January 28th, 2016.

So wish me luck. Say a prayer. Keep me in your thoughts.

Some of you are thinking, "All 4 goals at once!? Are you nuts?"

Maybe I am being a little nuts, but lately I seem to be in a good spot mentally. Lately, most of the time when I'm smoking a cigarette, I been looking at that cancer stick and been thinking/feeling, 'I can hardly wait to quit you. I am getting sick of this.'

I have been feeling the same way with the Mountain Dew. Been looking at a bottle and thinking, 'Bleh'. Getting sick of this habit too.

That's it for now, so here are some highlights since the last time I posted anything....

Fantasy Football...I am in four fantasy leagues. I am the commissioner of three of them. The league I am not the commissioner of, I won the Fantasy Bowl!!!! Yeah Me!!!

Got a camcorder for Christmas. So my next blog will be my first attempt of making a video blog. I took some time off of work for a mental vacation and I took one of those days and treated Minnesota Highway 61 like it was Route 66 to see how many geocaches I could find in a day. I learned quite a few things. One, my original expectations of geocaching Route 66 might turn out to be something totally different in reality. Hope you enjoy it.

Until next time my friends, Enjoy Life
